Hands-on learning in art, in the food forest, and in working with the nature of Smith Island, for emerging artists, growers, and anyone in a season of transition.
An internship here means learning alongside people who care about what they're building, and seeing your work become part of a living place.
Interns are welcomed as members of the community, not as extra hands. In return for their time and energy, interns receive mentorship and a meaningful portfolio. Their creative work may also be shown in the gallery at The Koi House.
Work alongside Jemma on pieces that leave a lasting mark on the Center and its grounds.

On-site art installations: permanent works that respond to the island and the land
A food forest works the way a forest does: in layers, in relationship, over time. The soil deepens, and the system gives back more than you put in.
Hugelkultur: raised beds built on buried wood
No-dig growing that works with the land rather than against it
Planting in circles: designing the food forest in living rings
Smith Island sits in one of the richest estuaries in the world. Learn its rhythms and care for the life around us.
Ducks: caring for ducks and getting to know the waterfowl of the marsh
Birds: herons, ospreys, and the seasonal migrations of the bay
Tides & weather: reading the water and sky that shape island life
We'd love to hear what you'd bring and what you hope to learn.
